History
In ancient China, Fluorite was used as a dreamcatcher, believed to control dreams and make them beautiful. Artifacts made from Fluorite have been discovered in Egyptian tombs, indicating its use in burial ceremonies and as a symbol of wealth and status. Fluorite stems from the Latin word ‘fluere’ which means "to flow". It was the first mineral to have been found with a fluorescent characteristic, therefore it gave its name to the fluorescence phenomenon. The mineral fluorite was originally named Fluorospar and was first discussed in print in 1530 by Georgius Agricola. Historically, it is one of the most valuable and coveted stones because of its appearance. Pliny the Elder in book 37 of his Naturalis Historia, describes it as a precious stone whose objects carved from it, the Romans prize.
Science & Origin
Fluorite forms as a late-crystallizing mineral in igneous rocks as a vein deposit fired through hydrothermal activity. It crystallizes in a cubic motif but can be found in octahedral forms as well. It is the only gemstone that has perfect cleavage and spreads in four different directions. It appears in many colours depending on its chemical composition. Element substitution for the calcium cation often includes strontium and certain rare-earth elements, such as yttrium and cerium. It is a common mineral mainly distributed in South Africa, China, Mexico, Mongolia, the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Tanzania, Rwanda, and Argentina.
