History

Labradorite was first discovered at the end of the 18th century by Moravian missionaries near Labrador, Canada, and gets its name from this location. According to Inuit legends, the Labrador Coast was once filled with trapped Northern Lights or Aurora Borealis. The legend says an ancient warrior speared the coast to create Labradorite. This gemstone was used by many ancient civilisations. It gets its name from the location where it was discovered. Traditionally, it’s a stone of power that repels evil.

Science & Origin

Labradorite is a calcium-enriched feldspar mineral rich in sodium that crystallises in the form of masses and can display an iridescent effect (schiller). It occurs as clear, white to grey, blocky to lath-shaped grains in common mafic igneous rocks such as basalt and gabbro, as well as in anorthosites. It usually forms from molten magma deep within the earth and takes millions of years to crystallize and form layers that create gorgeous flashes. Labradorite is renowned for its mirage of colours and display of Labradorescence. This effect does not come from light reflected from the surface of this mineral; the spectrum of colours is caused by light reflecting off of a twinning surface within the stone. Its flash of colours can contain blue, green, yellow, orange, red, and even purple. The variation which displays the entire colour spectrum is called Spectrolite. Labradorite can be found in the United States, Canada, Madagascar, Russia, Norway, and the United Kingdom.
