History
Hindu legend links the stone’s formation to the crystallised rays of the moon formed hundreds of thousands of years ago and it was believed it is part of the moon. The Romans called it the ‘collective beam of moonlight in a solid form’, believing that it linked the wearer to the moon goddess Diana, and wore it for love and victory. Some cultures believed it helped make the right decisions. It’s originally perceived to carry the new moon’s energy and improve the user’s psychic capability and visionary concept.
Later, part of the cultural and religious beliefs of Greeks and Romans, moonstone became a common jewellery element during the Art Noveau movement (1890-1910) and a favourite healing, meditative, and transcendent item among the ’60s flower children and ’90s New Age followers. According to Middle Eastern women, the stone has effects on fertility while European Legend associates it with love and renewal.
Science & Origin
Moonstone, also known as Hecatolite, is an aluminium, potassium, sodium, silicate, feldspar mineral, and a variety of Orthoclase (with Albite inclusions). The stone was named by A.G. Werner in 1780 given its light reflective rainbow effect on the stone’s surface during light diffraction. This has made Moonstone extremely valuable in the jewelry world thus resulting in high prices. Moonstone is widely available around the world but the highest quality material used by jewellers is usually from Madagascar, India, Brazil, Myanmar, Australia, and Sri Lanka.
