History

Agate gets its name from the Achates River, which is now known as the Dirillo River, and Moss Agate is named after its moss-like inclusions. It’s also known as Mocca or Mocha Stone for its ancient discovery in Mocha, Yemen. Moss Agate was used in Europe for religious rituals such as purification, priests wore it for its power and believed it would help speed up recovery. Agates have been seen in the artifacts of ancient India, and in some cultures, Moss Agates talismans were worn by soldiers before going into battle. Moss Agate used to be closely linked to agriculture and farmers. British farmers in the 18th century hung Moss Agate crystals on their livestock and crops to attract rich harvests. Other cultures placed it at the entrance or windows of their homes to prevent scorpions, spiders, or other unwanted crawlies entering the house.

Science & Origin

Moss Agate is a Chalcedony formed from silicon dioxide, a milky-white quartz with dendritic inclusions of Manganese, Chrome, and/or Iron. The impurities within resemble moss and other various patterns, leading one to believe true organic matter is encased inside. However, that is not true at all, as Moss Agate formed from the weathering of strong volcanic rock. The deep colors and vibrant patterns are simply due to different levels of oxidation of the crystals within. These colors are most notably green or brown, but can also be seen as yellow, red, and black. Deposits of Moss Agates can be found all over the globe since their initial discovery, making them easily accessible to amateur gem hunters, however, the main sources are in India, Brazil, Uruguay, central Europe & USA.

Healing Properties & Benefits

Moss Agate supports new beginnings by attracting abundance, releasing fear, and creating the space for personal growth. This stone balances emotions with intellect and stabilizes physical energy. Also serving as a stone of safety and protection, Agate guards against dangers and grants strength and stamina. It safeguards the user by returning negative energy and ill intentions to their sources.

Moss Agate improves mental and emotional clarity, increases energy, and helps to stabilize the metabolism, even lending aid to conditions such as ulcers. These qualities can not only activate the wearer’s creative flow but also maintain it for extended periods. Agates also enhance analytical abilities and concentration, making them useful for those who are in school or those who are in the process of learning new skills.

This crystal offers up shells of protection around your aura and truly lets you be you. Moss Agate encourages self-expression and rebuilding of divine connection to nature that most of our childhoods were consumed with. Pure happiness and joy are all around us; through life, animals, food, and art. Moss Agate provides one with a new desire to find comfort in smaller, more human things; as opposed to unnatural desires society presents to us. When holding or wearing the stone, allow that inner, carefree child to shine through. There is love within you just waiting to be released and what better way to release this energy than with the simplest things life has to offer?

Moss Agate resonates with the heart chakra, spreading good vibes. If this energy centre is in balance, we feel genuine love for life and want to work in cooperation for the greatest good of the community. We can form healthy relationships, experience unconditional love, feel whole, and we are satisfied with who we are. If the Moss Agate has more white or clear areas, Milky quartz, then it’s great to use in meditation for focus and growth due to its connection to our crown chakra. Some types of Moss Agate are also linked to the sacral chakra which will help with being grounded in our sexuality and promote creativity. More on chakra healing
