History

Smoky Quartz was commonly found and used by many civilisations. Due to its smoky appearance, this type of Quartz was often associated with dark magic. The ancient druids referred to the stone as sacred and divine stone and respected its power even if it was associated with dark magic. Smoky Quartz was placed on top of corpses in the belief that it led spirits into the underworld. Known as the stone of power, it is the national stone of Scotland. The Scots used it for jewellery and as decoration on kilts and handles of sgianan-dubha, a knife that was worn as part of the traditional Scottish Highland dress. In 12th-century China, Smoky Quartz was used as sunglasses in the form of flat panes. Although smokey quartz had been widely available for various purposes, due to its powerful healing properties it gained importance in recent times becoming a popular gemstone.

Science & Origin

Smoky Quartz is a type of high-vibrational Quartz crystal and gets its smoky colour from natural irradiation due to the surrounding rock activating the aluminium impurities within the crystalline quartz. Quartz crystal is an igneous rock made of silicon dioxide and it is commonly found in sedimentary and metamorphic rocks, usually crystallizes from molten magma but can also precipitate from hot hydrothermal veins or with other minerals. Smoky Quartz ranges in clarity from an almost opaque crystal to almost completely transparent. It has many varieties, including Marion, a very dark brown to black opaque quartz, and Cairngorm, which has a smoky yellow-brown colour and is found in the Scottish mountains. 

Smoky Quartz forms in masses and crystal structures of all sizes and can be mined all over the world, but the best specimens come from Brazil, Australia, New England, USA and Africa.
