History

This crystal gained its name from the Greek word "Amethystos" which translates to "not intoxicated". According to ancient texts, when Amethyst is worn, or drunk from Amethyst drinking vessels, allows the wearer to avoid intoxication. Known as the Gem of Fire and Purple Quartz, Amethyst was also once as pricey as diamonds. Ancient Egyptians, Hindus, Christians, and many other cultures used Amethyst amulets for protection in battle in the belief that amethysts heal people and keep them cool-headed. Beads of amethyst were also found in Anglo-Saxon graves in England. Although today Amethyst is a semi-precious stone, as it was regarded as a very valuable precious stone, Catholic Bishops, British, and Russian crowns are dressed in this stone, and Tibetan Buddhists linked the spiritual qualities of the stone to Buddha and used it in meditation practices.

Science & Origin

Amethyst is a purple variety of Quartz that has become one of the most popular and well-known crystals in the mineral kingdom. Quartz is an igneous rock composed of oxygen and silicon atoms that crystallize around magma or hydrothermal vents. Amethyst gains its beautiful colour from gamma irradiation, trace amounts of Iron, and heating processes which result in complex crystal lattice substitutions. Its structure provides the quartz’s hardness and resistance to weathering. This stone is given various names depending on its formation or locality, including Rwanda Amethyst and Chevron Amethyst. Most of the world's supply of Amethyst currently comes from Brazil and Uruguay.
